Evangelism can be a scary concept for many Christians. The word itself carries a lot of baggage, including perceived pressure to convince people to move from unbelief to belief through our carefully crafted presentations.

But what if evangelism had more to do with highlighting aspects of the Kingdom of God, asking good questions, and inviting people to discover more about Jesus than it does convincing someone to believe something they don’t yet believe? This module will focus on practical ways to engage people in spiritual discussions and invite them to discover for themselves the teachings of Jesus.

As we seek to have intentional conversations in our contexts, here are 3 practical tips:

1. The best way to move from casual to meaningful to spiritual conversation is by asking good questions. In the Gospels, Jesus asked 307 questions, showing us how effective a well-timed, caring, and intentional question can be in blowing open the doors to having meaningful and spiritual conversations.

One helpful acronym we use that can help us understand what people talk about in life, and in turn, the types of questions we can ask, is F.R.O.G. Asking questions around these topics of life can open up opportunities for meaningful and spiritual conversations.

F - friends & Family

R - Recreation

O - Occupation

G - Goals & Gifts

2 ) Be ready to share 15 Second Stories: As we ask good questions, we also get opportunities to share real stories of God. More and more people these days are asking, not if God is REAL, but whether or not God WORKS. So sharing personal stories from our own lives can be incredibly powerful.

3 ) Make the ask to discover more. Spiritual conversations are often how we find persons of peace. Within these conversations, there are natural opportunities to invite people to discover more about God directly from the Bible. Discovery Bible Study environments get launched in the context of spiritual conversations.

Additionally, in essentially every movement we see a discipleship method that is DISCOVERY based (very little proclamation or teaching) and OBEDIENCE based (a focus on immediate response to the words in the Bible over knowledge). Spiritually interested people are invited to do a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) right where they are. This week we will dive a little deeper into the DBS method, and how anyone can begin to make disciples no matter how experienced they are with it.
